Frequent question: I was looking at compensation for my role at Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, and Teamblind.com. Why is my company unfair and paying me well below market?
Answer: No person working in compensation would suggest that you look at online websites which provide free compensation data. This advice is specifically for managers who think that online salary research is a great way to get a pulse of market data. The only thing worse than online data is asking your colleagues in other companies how much they pay their employees.
There are at least twenty reasons to justify this.
To close, think big and take a bigger view of life. Don’t spend your life like a lab rat running faster and faster on a hamster wheel trying to get paid more. Money matters, but a balance is necessary. It is not worth the price you pay in terms of health and emotional well-being if you have a single-point agenda in your life – about increasing compensation.
